You just became the new spokesperson for the new DoSomething campaign.
Sophia: Yes I’m thrilled to be joining DoSomething. I think they’re doing wonderful work. And I was really excited when I heard that they were turning their attention into ecological issues. I was thrilled when I heard about the campaign and then very flattered when they asked me to assist them in launching it. So I’m very excited to be a part of it. I think if we can spread information and help people see that it’s not just choosing to live a green life, it’s choosing to live well. A life that is ecologically friendly. I think we can do great things.

You have been using your Twitter account as a major way to help the Gulf, to fund-raise. You and Austin Nichols have raised a ton of money and have engaged your fans in creative ways through the giveaways. Can you talk about that and how the idea sparked to start the Crowdrise page and contests?
Sophia: The point for me is not just to raise money, it’s to raise awareness. It’s to change the way that people live and the way that they look at the earth and the way they look at what they consume, what they use, what products they buy. We have to be responsible. And for me I’ve learned that people really want to know what I’m up to, so I’d rather share this with them than anything else. Prior to going down to the Gulf, I had no interest in being a part of any of that sort of social media because I didn’t want to share my private life. But this is a passion I’ve had since I was a child and it was really ignited by the oil spill and I’m incredibly glad that I’ve reached out the way that I have because the support that’s come back has been overwhelming.
